Issues and Causes

Dr. Mercola firmly believes that the current health paradigm is fundamentally flawed. Conventional health recommendations, such as using pharmaceutical drugs indiscriminately, only add burden to people’s health. He believes that natural and simple strategies can prevent and even reverse illness.

We at Mercola.com intend to inform and educate people about the traps set by conventional medicine and profit-driven industries. We are dedicated to raising awareness on health issues that are strongly backed by the conventional health paradigm or big businesses, such as:

  • Use of Pharmaceutical Drugs. In 2013 alone, it is estimated that Americans will spend more than $280 billion on prescription drugs. Prescription and over-the-counter drugs prescribed for “treating” illnesses are now a leading cause of mortality in the United States, causing more deaths than vehicular accidents. People should be conscious of the side effects of harmful and often unnecessary drugs and medical procedures, and strive to find safer, natural alternatives.
  • Medical Malpractice and Overspending. Americans spend twice as much on health care per capita than any other country in the world, but rank last among industrialized countries in terms of quality of care. Gross overcharges, hospital billing fraud, and costs of unnecessary tests and treatments are the main reasons behind the $750 billion Americans overspend each year on health care. In fact, 60 percent of all personal bankruptcies in the United States are health care-related. And yet, we receive inferior medical care, with over 40,000 harmful and/or lethal medical errors occurring every day.
  • Genetically Engineered Foods. Dr. Mercola was the largest personal contributor to Prop 37 in California, which would have required labeling of genetically engineered foods. Over 90 percent of US crops is now genetically modified and patented by companies like Monsanto and DuPont. We believe that consumers have the right to know if their food has been genetically engineered.

  • Mercury in Dentistry. We strongly advocate mercury-free dentistry, as mercury, the primary component used in dental amalgams or “silver fillings,” is a potent neurotoxin that causes psychological, neurological, immunological, and endocrinal damage. Together with Consumers for Dental Choice, our efforts to raise awareness on the dangers of dental mercury dangers have been instrumental in the upcoming global phase down of mercury fillings.

  • Water Fluoridation. When ingested, fluoridation chemicals may cause severe health hazards, such as dental fluorosis and osteosarcoma. Yet this dangerous toxin, touted for its “tooth decay-fighting” benefits, is still being added to our water supply without our consent.
    Water Fluoridation

Learn the hard facts and figures on water fluoridation and its dangers through this Mercola infographic.

Our active campaign against the adding of this toxic waste to public water systems has moved many US communities, such as Portland, Oregon and Windsor, Ontario, to take action and prevent their water supply from being fluoridated.

In May 21, 2013, Portland, Oregon residents successfully voted against their City Council’s decision to add risky fluoridation chemicals to their city’s water supply, which comes from the Bull Run Watershed and is considered among the purest in the world.

  • Forced Vaccinations. Federal, state, and private campaigns are heating up to force vaccination upon workers and students. We believe all people have the right to voluntary, informed consent when it comes to vaccinations.

We are determined to spread the message and support campaigns that promote these health issues. We aim to present the truth as supported by facts, data, statistics, and testimonials from other health experts and organizations.

We also persistently encourage people to try safer natural techniques that will help them to take control of their health.

Partner Organizations

Mercola.com partners with health and research organizations who aim to educate the public on important health, food safety, and informed consent issues. All of our partner organizations have a rich history of advocacy and active campaigning for change and better access to truly empowering health information. With the help of these non-profit institutions, we are able to provide our consumers with timely, relevant, and accurate health updates.

We assist these organizations by:

  • Allowing them to spread their message among Mercola readers and subscribers. Our site acts as a gateway that lets them reach out to a bigger and more diverse audience.
  • Helping create awareness on issues they advocate. Most of our partner sites need a platform to help them to raise awareness on controversial health issues. By leveraging Mercola.com and our staff, they are able to bring important issues to the fore and get support.
  • Promoting and supporting their fundraising endeavors, so that they can continue to carry out their campaigning. We donate to their causes without any compensation.

Our harmonious teamwork with these institutions has led to the formation of Health Liberty, a non-profit coalition that aims to help protect every American’s freedom to make voluntary health choices. Health Liberty is formed by the following organizations:

Fundraising Efforts

We make it a point to donate to campaigns that are in line with our health objectives. We also spearhead and support fundraising events for our partner organizations, so they may continue with their mission to improve people’s health.

We are proud to take part in successful fundraising campaigns:

  • GMO Labeling Efforts in Different US States

We have been very active in campaigning for GMO labeling state laws, which will require all foods with GMO ingredients to be appropriately labeled.

Together with a broad coalition of farmers, health groups, and organic food manufacturers, we have helped raised over a million dollars for the “Money Bomb on Monsanto” campaign in support of the 2012 California Ballot Initiative (the Right to Know GMO campaign). We are also spearheading the campaign for the state of Washington’s People’s Initiative 522 (I-522) or “The People’s Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act,” urging our readers to donate to this cause.

The donations we receive from these fundraising efforts will help fund advertisement for and support state GMO-labeling campaigns and their defense from biotech lawsuits.

  • Vaccine Awareness

We strongly advocate the importance of making safe and informed vaccine choices, and one way of helping promote this cause is by donating to NVIC campaigns.

Mercola.com sponsored their multi-state anti-vaccination billboard campaign, which involved placing educational vaccine awareness ads in several cities including Chicago, Phoenix, Tucson, Portland, Olympia, and Austin and reached over 10 million people.

  • Grassroots Health D* Action Project

We encourage people to support and participate in the D* Action Project, an independent pioneering study that aims to solve the vitamin D deficiency epidemic, and is the largest vitamin D research at present. Through the D* Action Project, the study proponents will generate more funding to produce a more extensive research on the benefits of vitamin D for people’s health.

Mercola.com sells and ships the vitamin D testing kits needed for this groundbreaking study. We do not collect profits from these kits, as we sell it at the same price we buy it for.

  • Awareness Weeks

Together with partner organizations, we celebrate Awareness Weeks that target increased awareness of health issues, such as mercury in dentistry and fluoride in drinking water. During these events, we publish special articles and release informative videos on Mercola.com about the highlighted topic, generating interest and raising donations for nonprofit orgs.

A portion of the sales from Mercola products during the Awareness Week is also donated to our partner organization.

  • Education. We sponsor select high school students from the Good News Christian Academy of Ifugao (GNCAI), Philippines. Established in 1996, GNCAI is the only Christian school in Ifugao, a rural province in the mountainous Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). Our scholars are consistently at the top of their class.

  • Building Houses for Less-Privileged Families. The Mercola team recently helped build homes for poor families, in partnership with non-profit organization Gawad Kalinga. Gawad Kalinga aims to end poverty for five million Filipino families by year 2024, and is now working in almost 2,000 communities not only in the Philippines, but also in other developing countries like Indonesia, Cambodia, and Papua New Guinea.

  • Reaching Out to Cancer-Stricken Kids. The Mercola team has conducted outreach programs for the children of Kythe Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides support to pediatric patients and their families. Aside from helping children cope with hospital confinement, Kythe also seeks sponsors for child patients in their care.

Milestones

Mercola.com prides itself as a trusted source of reliable and accurate health information. Our influence has spread not only in the United States, but in other countries as well – serving millions of visitors each month.

Mercola products are also widely renowned today, as we are known as a leading provider of high-quality supplements and other wellness products. We have served hundreds of thousands of satisfied customers, and many order our products regularly.

The advocacies we promote have taken root in many individuals, and have urged them to take action and be more watchful of their health decisions. Many of the campaigns we have supported have also reaped favorable outcomes in the best interest of public health and awareness.

  • Toward Global Phase Down of Dental Amalgam

We have closely partnered with anti-mercury organizations, such as Consumers for Dental Choice and the Mercury Policy Project, to form a global mercury treaty that will eliminate this damaging toxin from dentistry.

Despite opposition from powerful health agencies, including the American Dental Association (ADA), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), we were able to achieve an agreement for a global phase down. Many countries, such as Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Russia, and Japan, are now reducing or completely eliminating mercury from their dental practice – and many will follow suit.

  • Communities Vote Against Water Fluoridation

Emboldened by our reports on the dangers of fluoride (in cooperation with the Fluoride Action Network), many communities are now standing up for their right to fluoride-free water.

For example, residents of Portland, Oregon have united to defend the future of their water supply, which was being set up for fluoridation by their city council. The city’s water comes from the Bull Run watershed – a 102-square mile protected watershed that is so pristine and pure that it was even granted a special waiver from having to build a water treatment plant.

Fluoridating Portland’s drinking water will not only potentially cause environmental chemical pollution and increase Portlanders’ risks of dental fluorosis and other health concerns, but will also raise residents’ monthly water bills, as adding these industrial waste chemicals costs millions of dollars.

In May 21, 2013, the residents, led by the Clean Water Portland (CWP) coalition, cast their votes against water fluoridation, and defeated fluoridation proponents by a 61% to 39% margin – a victory that will not only preserve Portland’s pristine watershed, but will also protect the citizens from the dangers of fluoridation.

  • GMO Labeling Initiatives

The damaging health and environmental effects of GMOs in our food supply have urged organic food and health activists and scientists in California – supported by consumers and farmers across the country – to stand up to Monsanto and the biotech industry and to push for mandatory GMO labeling through a grassroots-powered Citizen’s Ballot Initiative process. The initiative, called California Proposition 37 (the Right to Know GMO Act), was the first ballot’s Initiative that called for the labeling of GMO foods or products that contain GMO ingredients.

However, strong advertising efforts from the opposition’s “NO to 37″ campaign has led to the loss of Proposition 37, albeit by a narrow margin. We view the campaign as a major success, as it has brought global attention to genetically engineered foods and their effects on our food supply.

Our fight against GMOs continues, as we shift our focus to the state of Washington’s People’s Initiative 522 (I-522) or The People’s Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act.

Our social responsibility is promoting valuable health information – it is a mission that we will never cease to fulfill. With your help, we have been able to help educate the public and to help you make informed health choices for yourselves and your families. We hope that with our continuous service, you will stay motivated to take control of your health.
